ASPC's Position on Non-medical Switching

Non-medical switching (NMS) occurs when a payer, not a clinician, changes a stable patient’s medication for non-medical, commonly cost-saving, reasons. NMS does nothing to improve a patient’s health or well-being but does introduce unnecessary patient risk. Among these risks, which are greatest in patients with barriers to physician access, non-medical switching can cause dangerous interruptions in medication therapy, inappropriate dosing of medications, and unanticipated drug-drug interactions. For these reasons, the American Society for Preventive Cardiology uniformly condemns its practice.
