Professional Bio
Dr. Anurag Mehta is a physician-scientist and a nationally recognized leader in cardiovascular disease prevention. He currently serves as an Assistant Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine and as the Director of Preventive Cardiology at the Pauley Heart Center, where he has established a robust clinical and research program focused on reducing the burden of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) and advancing precision medicine strategies.
Dr. Mehta earned his medical degree from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, India, where he ranked among the top graduates in his cohort. Following his Internal Medicine residency at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, he pursued a fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine at Emory University. During his time at Emory, Dr. Mehta was a Katz Preventive Cardiology Fellow and a postdoctoral researcher at the Emory Clinical Cardiovascular Research Institute.
Dr. Mehta’s research focuses on the genetic, biomolecular, and epidemiological determinants of cardiometabolic health, particularly the role of lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] as a critical, genetically determined risk factor for ASCVD. His investigations have leveraged large population-based cohorts to elucidate novel biomarkers and mechanisms underlying cardiovascular risk. His work aims to close critical gaps in understanding the role of Lp(a) in cardiometabolic health, with an emphasis on translating these findings into actionable prevention and treatment strategies.
